h.265 OK, h.264 still no thumbnail

i managed to install AME and the system just started to generate the thumbnails/previews for all photos and videos. realized afterwards that just the h.265 videos had thumbnails, not the h.264. even if i don't have thumbnails i still can play the files in the browser (synology photo). just need the thumbnails to be generated (server side not image assistant which i hate)

i stopped with the installation before the audio (DTS etc) guide.

please help

LE: did the ffmeg 6 as well with the video station and audio script... still nothing :(

I've noticed Synology Photos does not see .mkv files at all. Only my .mp4 files show up.

I have the opposite, with a thumbnail for a small h264 video, and no thumbnails for large h264 and x265 videos.

I use video station for videos, and it create thumbnails for h.265, h.264, x265 and x264, mp4 and mkv.

last night launched a re-index in synology photos settings and except all the hdd starting to spin loudly nothing was happening as i was expecting to see the media indexing in taskbar. this morning i woke up to meds indexing running (working on videos preview/thumbnails) and in photos i can now see thumbnails.

no mkv for me, just pure photo library (close to 1TB) with jpeg, heic, mov, mp4

so it looks like all the steps done yesterday worked but not clear the process so maybe we can clarify for posterity

installed the HVEC - media indexing kicked in and all HEIC and HVEC video had thumbnail (AVC/h264 played but no thumbnails)
installed ffmpeg, video stations and media server - nothing happened
deleted video station
in synology photos settings started a re-index - overnight media indexing kicked in

now the question is what made the media indexing kick in for the AVC/h264 thumbnail? ffmpeg or re-index?

Maybe it's one those processes that DSM runs at midnight. I'll check mine tomorrow.

If I can see the thumbnails tomorrow I won't know if it's because I clicked on re-index or ffmpeg as I updated ffmpeg to v7 today.

FYI with the HVEC it kicked the media indexing instantly post installation

I just checked mine again and I noticed one of the 2 videos with a black thumbnail actually has a thumbnail, but because it's the ocean at night it looks black until you look really closely. For the one that has genuine black screen when I click on it to play it I get a message saying to create a compressed copy of it.

checked again and looks like all (checked randomly) videos now have thumbanails... still don't know what made it work but at list it worked.

maybe the answer it is in the control menu -- media reindex，there is an option when to produce the thumbnail，i choose 01：00 to 23:00，then it works and produce the thumbnial!!! maybe your option is 00:00 to 01:00 so DSM work at midnight
