re-organise ice calculations #184

Currently there's no way to eval the ice functions without calling the class which is less than ideal!
There are two options:

keep the class and create separate functions that call the class functions for use to use
remove the class and call directly the functions
I'm inclined to go with the second as they're always used independently and it would be easier for someone else to add an extra function then
