In discussions related to key4hep/EDM4hep#237 the question came up whether there is interest in having the possibility of having, e.g. double in memory but write only float onto the file. As discussed during the EDM4hep meeting on Nov 7 the podio writers / readers are probably the easiest place to implement this in practice.

This issue serves mainly as a discussion / summary board for anything related to this (and also to gauge how large the interest really is in the end).

Closing this again, since we have concluded that the compression of the I/O backend should do the heavy lifting here and we currently don't have the person power to actually do something in this directin.
