SSD instead of SD card

I want to install everything on a 240gb sdd, and use it via usb.

Could I get in trouble for doing this? Do I need to change any settings for it to work?

You will need to set the pi (Is it a pi 4?) to boot from the ssd.

Allsky doesn't care if its an ssd or sd card as it just sees a disk. There are no settings in Allsky that need to be changed

Before I upgraded to the pi 5 I had a pi4 with a USB drive running for a long time without any issues.

Yes, but it would need manually setting up.

Why not just run the OS and Allsky from the ssd?

yes that's probably easier. But how do I keep the configurations and settings from the current Allsky (and websites)? Do I move the Allsky directory on the SD card to a directory Allsky_old on the SSD?

@ova103, if you move the allsky directory to an ssd but keep the full pathname the same you won't need to change anything. For example, if it's in /home/pi/allsky now and you move everything to an ssd and the directory on the ssd is still /home/pi/allsky, you are fine.

Otherwise you need to reinstall Allsky so it can save the new location.

I have copied (not moved) the allsky directory from my SD card (/home/Olivier/allsky)
to my SSD (/mnt/ssd/home/Olivier/allsky.

So did I do well? Is this what you mean by keeping the full pathname?

Note: I did not change yet the name of allsky on the sd card

What should I do next to run the allsky from the SSD?

A "full pathname" is one that starts with /, which is the root of the directory tree, so /home/Olivier/allsky is not the same as /mnt/ssd/home/Olivier/allsky.

Replacing the SD card with the SSD is, in my opinion, the best solution. You would be increasing disk space and reliability. Using both an SD card and SSD only increases disk space, and complicates your Allsky setup.

Assuming you want to continue booting off the SD card, you have two choices:

1. Move all of Allsky to the SSD.
2. Move only the allsky/images folder to the SSD.
