Last week while visiting a friend I got acquainted with the Roon Player. It has a lot of great features but I was actually pleased with how well OMPD held its own. One feature I thought was nice was the waveform display on the progress bar, it was very helpful when wanting to skip to quieter / louder parts of the song.
I looked at slimpd a few years back, from memory I found it's requirements too rigid so getting it to run on various systems was not easy. From a quick glance it looks like slimpd hasn't been maintained for years now too.

I know FFMPEG can generate these and there are other programs too like https://github.com/bbc/audiowaveform
Perhaps this could be another off-by default feature and configurable to look for pre-existing images or generate on demand?
