  • Erin: are we missing any areas of eco/mgt concern? Does this simple 3-tier (eg Federal > Sanctuaries > Channel Islands) hierarchy work for something like a dropdown list to select AOI?

  • data/areas-of-interest: locate spatial data, download into Gdrive, and organize for reading in R #5

  • Shiny app to simply select them:

    1. Initially show all layers? Maybe color coded (shades of blue for Federal) with high transparency.
    2. Dropdowns:
      a. Select Tiers 1 & 2: filters the mapped layers
      b. Tier 3 populates based on first dropdown
    3. Multi-select by layer on map (space) or name on list. API implications: summarize across all or group by AOI
    4. Other:
    • Draw your own AOI
    • Upload shapefile
    • Enter coordinates
  • CalCOFI study area

    • maybe strata for phytoplankton
  • Federal

    • Sanctuaries
    • IEA California Current
    • CCAs
    • EEZ federal: 12 to 200 nm (see MarineCadastre.org)
    • BOEM: Wind Energy Areas, aliquots, etc
  • State

    • MPAs
    • EEZ state: 3nm
  • County

    • sanitation districts
    • ports
    • watershed HUCs (pollutant modeling)

I think these are the main ones -- added some specificity below:

  • CalCOFI study area

CalCOFI Regions-- Station # > 60 = oceanic/offshore; <60 = neritic/nearshore/continental shelf (other regions include those from Venrick et al. 2012- http://calcofi.org/publications/calcofireports/v56/Vol56-Venrick.web.168-184.pdf or Stephens et al. 2018- https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2018GB005930)

Awesome @evsatt! We can start populating these into a Google Drive for starters, then perhaps spatial database.
