Create a special page for “Newcomers" with a roadmap for newbies
The roadmap should have specific steps
Something like

  1. Join our MeetUp group and RSVP to the next 101 orientation
  2. Quick and easy registration to our site so we can have your eMail address
  3. Check our Existing Active Working Projects (A, B, C,)
  4. ......

We've started adding content to our register page to make it more of a "How to get started" page than just a form to create an account
