The readme here mentions 3.0.x but we're at 3.1.x now.

Please update it to;

composer require --no-update "magento-hackathon/magento-composer-installer=3.1.*"
composer update --no-plugins --no-scripts magento-hackathon/magento-composer-installer

I've also added quotes so zshrc/fish won't complain about not being able to expand the *.
