the entire deepphe stack seems to run on log4j 1.2.17, which was depcrecated as of 2015. Should we update to log4j 2?

I don't think that it will break anything.

do you mean leaving it as is? or updating?

I meant that as a comment ... Actions taken in the future will be exactly that.
