I've tried lots of things, but I can't seem to get to the bottom of this.

I believe it's connected to #47, which still hasn't been fixed in the autoform package. When you go back, exceptions spam the console, so I'm guessing that this is the root cause.

Although, I'll abandon it for now if somebody else wants to give it a go.
