About to say good bye
Hi, thank you for using Gitako! I hope Gitako has been helpful to you in the past. However, Gitako is about to be deprecated soon.
tl;dr: Gitako does not guarantee to fix its issues in future if GitHub does not provide good support for 3rd party extensions.
At first, I created Gitako to enhance the browsing experience on GitHub, dedicated to building the fastest and most convenient GitHub file browsing plugin. I put in tremendous effort to maintain it for 6 years since 2017. I could proudly say it was the fastest and most efficient among similar free plugins. Over the past years, everything went smoothly, and I could handle occasional issues with ease. Gradually, Gitako gained popularity (~16k users at peak), and its user base steadily grew. It brought me joy to help others, and that happiness motivated me to keep maintaining it.
Deep down in my heart, I always hoped that GitHub would integrate Gitako's features, especially the file tree, as it seemed almost unimaginable that it wasn't a built-in GitHub feature. I was delighted to see over the past year that GitHub finally started making changes and incorporating more of the convenient features provided by Gitako, including project file trees, PR file trees, and button for copy file content. As a result, Gitako began disabling some of its functionalities, allowing users to use GitHub's native versions.
GitHub evolved, and Gitako adapted alongside it. However, recently, some significant changes on GitHub made it difficult for GitHub plugins, including Gitako, to adapt. While there might be technically viable solutions to these issues, the maintenance cost of implementing those challenging solutions became too much for me to bear. On the other hand, GitHub now essentially offers Gitako's features, though perhaps not as responsive, they are highly reliable.
So, although it pains me to do so, I believe it's time to say goodbye. If you encounter any quirky behavior with Gitako in the future or experience issues with GitHub, it may be due to Gitako struggling to keep up. Please disable Gitako and try again to ensure a smooth GitHub browsing experience.
Lastly, I wish GitHub continued growth and improvement! Thank you for reading.
