I went looking for a description of member Role Groups, but there doesn't seem to be any documentation for Role Groups.

I am presuming the function of Role Groups is to function similarly to the former Member Groups, and roles provide the granularity. That is to say, you might have Role Groups called "Authors" or "Commenters" and Roles called "Can author entries" and "Can author comments" but it would be nice to have that confirmed (or rebutted) in the documentation. It's a powerful feature.

It's not quite like that.
Role is what has come in place of Member Groups, and Role Group is solely collection of Role.
You can assign several roles to Role Group, and then adding member to that Role Group would have same effect that assigning each individual role from that group.
Role Groups do not provide any permissions of their own, they are just a tool to help organizing role.

And yes, we need to have this better documented!

Right, thanks!

I guess I thought the existence of groups would mean that Roles would naturally become more granular.
