Gaiden Magic is supposed to prevent spell usage if unit's HP is insufficient to cover spell costs. However, if unit doubles during player phase and doesn't have enough HP to cast the second use, or if countering on enemy phase without enough HP to cast the spell, while the animation won't play and not HP will be deducted, damage will still be dealt regardless.
