Unfortunately, the Xcode Source Editor functionality isn't as reliable as it could be. Hopefully, Apple will fix it sometime in the future.

But here are some workarounds that can help fix the issue:

  1. Open the Applications folder and rename Xcode to something else and then back to Xcode or simply move Xcode out of the Applications folder and back in – this is the most common fix (see here).
  2. If you're using the Xcodes app to manage your Xcode versions, turn on the "Always rename to Xcode.app" option for the active/selected Xcode version in the app's settings' "Advanced" tab.
  3. If you develop an app with an Xcode Source Editor extension yourself, Xcode might get confused by its build artifacts…
