Align district list with WinBMD list #42
Comments
G’day Barrie The questions regarding the district list should be directed to Steve as I am just a user who is actively testing, using and suggesting changes to the software. However, you should be aware that the functionality of the current MacBMD-X reflects the earlier version which was restricted to powerPC macs. MacBMD-X is not WinBMD for Mac especially in regard to an interface providing the user with the capability to store local changes to the configured districts list until such a time that it is updated. Additionally because of the historical design of MacBMD-X the only way to promulgate and update to the Districts list is to reissue the software. Regards

It is extremely unfortunately that the district list bmd_districts.txt is different from the WinBMD list WinBMD_Districts.txt, not only in format but in content. There should be a common list.
An analysis of the differences between the two lists shows that about 20% of the districts have different names and of those that have the same name 35% have different data. Some of these differences are minor, for example having a fullstop after "St" but nevertheless it cannot be right that there are differences.
It is not suggested that the WinBMD list is always correct but given its much greater exposure one would expect it to be closer.
A spreadsheet is attached that compares the two lists and there is a caveat on the percentages given above in that the formula that calculates the difference is very convoluted and could contain some errors (although all the entries marked as different that I looked at were indeed different). Unfortunately I have had to zip the spreadsheet because this system would not accept a xlsx file although it claimed it does.

A subsidiary issue is that the (WinBMD) district list gets re-issued from time to time and changes need to fed into the MacBMD-X list (or preferably there should be one list) although that leaves open the question of how a revised list is propagated to MacBMD-X users (WinBMD automatically updates the list when it changes).
