Both on iOS and Android if you close and restart the app after installing to home screen, it does not remember the board

I am using localStorage to keep the game state. According to this article I should use IndexDB https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/instant-and-offline/web-storage/offline-for-pwa
Need to explore what this involves.
