feature request: ftp/filesharing available in text and voice conference #634
Comments
Group file transfers is a pretty big ordeal. We did just recently merge a new implementation of groupchats into toxcore, which could feasibly support file transfers in the future (it's on the long-term agenda), but it's a very big job and probably won't get done unless we can find someone willing to fund the work. |
what do you think it would require? i've already asked my ftp share group on toxic to please show some love to your sponsorship page, as i really believe toxic is the wave that's going to carry both mobile termux users and linux chatterd straight into the undergroubd 90s warezshare place we've always dreamed of. we'll never need the web again; don't you know what a difference you've already made? :) it's huge!!
this is the blog i now host exclusively via content filesharing on toxic: patreon.com/agofficial
your work is amazing. please believe it; you've made it happen for me, and us, my followers.
what else can i do to help? i'm a startup with a new book out and, at the moment, i'm probably more broke than you, lmao. where do i start?<3
best,
ec

I appreciate that you enjoy our work and one-time donations are also much appreciated. As far as what it would take though, that is, to do the work, test it, review it, and then merge...it's hard to say, but at least a few months worth of full-time work. We would most likely implement it in a manner similar to how torrents work, which means we would not be able to utilize the exiting file transfer implementation, which is specifically designed around 1 to 1 transfers with friends and not all that well designed to begin with. |
Interesting. If you need devs or network managers, I can try to ask around for p2p guys (/girls, whomever), and also, I know you're busy, but I was wondering--had you looked into a lokinet onion service integration for the network? i'm not really a fan of the oxen network/optf after they treated me, despite me taking their client bug reports for their chats (hence the name), but lokinet's onion service encryption & yggdrasil would be *perfect* for fdroid/toxic releases. better than tor, when it works.
jeff, the dev, said he'd probably abandon the project to "the community for upkeep" after it was done, anyway, so you might have an in here. the optf unfortunately is garbage, tho.
let me know if there's anything you need.

hi :)
i'd like to make a request for /sendfile function to operate in the conference rooms in order to share data with the entire connected room?
thank you so much for existing--you're literally reviving 90s ftp with way better warez and everyone i got using it is really grateful (myself, included.)
best,
