This just came across my GitHub newsfeed: git2rdata, a package that provides a convenient way of storing R data.frames and their metadata (e.g. column classes, factor levels) in plain text. Basically, it just stores the data in a tab-separated file and the metadata in a specifically-formatted YAML file with the same prefix. Could be a possible alternative to the current system of storing metadata in file headers.
