large pThumb* and magick-* created

It must be something with my config, but I can't seem to setup the proper cache folder for the different thumb files and end up with a bunch of 'large' temp files all over the place in the webroot directory

How do I prevent this from happening? Why are these files so large when the images are less than 1MB?
