Installing font to your system could be inconvenient sometimes, why not use web fonts?
Simply include the corresponding css for the font you want.
- Droid Sans Mono for Powerline

More fonts will be added if requested.
If you are using Secure Shell, you can put the css url in user-css and put the font name in font-family in the setting.
