Can I change the type of numbered lists from integer to custom class

This is a concept question and the answer of "its not really practical/sensible" is fine.

In Factorio (PC Game) modding there is a uint type as its directly exposed from the c++. At present we either have it as a version of an integer where the Lua coder has to ensure they don't set it to a value below 0 or above the max uint size.

This means that all of our API calls provide/expect a uint key for array related activity. Some people have uint set as an alias of integer to make this "just work", but I have it as a sub type so my intellisense knows there is some difference between them.

To avoid lots of @cast and @as I wondered if it was possible/practical to have the key in an array "[]" as a uint rather than as an integer. So this would also then propagate through to pairs and # automatically.

I tried having a mess around to do this, but I couldn't find the right place to make the change(s)and I was using old changelog notes that refer to types in pairs() as a guide.

So to give something similar as the below, but just as the default.

I am having trouble understanding the question.

You are able to get the uint "type" by doing the above code, but you are looking for a way to do this without having to annotate ---@class uint : integer?

By default Sumneko assumes all arrays are {int:T}. I'd like to know if its feasible for me to change Sumneko to assume arrays are {uint:T}.

The only way to use your custom type as an "array" would be to use a @class and generics, the way you have done above. Otherwise this would require TYPE[] to be parsed differently by the language server.

TypeScript works in the same way, requiring you to create your own type and specify it every time when used:

type uintArray<T> = {[index: number]: T}

function push(arr: uintArray, value: any) {}

If you are just looking to make it faster to annotate, you could try creating your own snippets so that, for example, typing farr would offer ---@class FArray<$1> with the cursor being placed at the (not included) $1 symbol.

No worries, I shall persist in just @as or @cast when its occasionally needed.
