[Feature request] Remove vertical bar when no clock

When the clock is disabled, there remains a vertical bar at the side of the screen (see white vertical bare at center left of below screenshot).

Is there a way to disable this bar? If not, could we add that option, or perhaps hide the bar by default if nothing is visible?

If someone pointed me towards the relevant code I'd be happy to do it myself, but I want to hold off creating a pull request until I confirm maintainers are on board.
