Horizontal and vertical difference

the user should be able to define two points on the canvas and the interface should tell the horizontal and/or vertical difference

Maybe a simple "rectangle" tool would work, i.e. the ability to draw an arbitrary rectangle on the plot and read out the vertical and horizontal size in plot coordinates. This could also be useful for more precise zooming I suppose.
