I also noticed there can be markup tags present in the abstract, like <para> or <section>. We could remove them but with multiple section headings it might be confusing to read without the tags. Perhaps we could separate section headings from text with a dash " - " or something like that. I think in most cases (<para> tags are more common in my experience) it would be fine to remove.

I think it would be fine to remove them. Originally we thought we could try to leverage them to keep the door open for some rendering. Maybe add a parameter that let the user the option to overwrite the default behavior of removing the tags.
