Access register values from running Emulator with python script

Hello,

is it possible to access the register values when I start a program in the Ghidra emulator within the GUI?
So far I tried the following without success (only returning 0 for all values) and could not find another suitable method:

from ghidra.app.emulator import EmulatorHelper
from ghidra.program.model.lang import Register

emulator = EmulatorHelper(currentProgram)

# Print the values of all registers
print "Register Values:"
for register in currentProgram.getLanguage().getRegisters():
    if not register.isBaseRegister():
        continue  # Skip non-base registers
    value = emulator.readRegister(register)
    print "{}: 0x{:X}".format(register.getName(), value)

In the end I would like to achieve the following workflow:

1. set some breakpoints in the GUI
2. start emulation trace in the GUI and reach a breakpoint
3. run python script to print register values
