I was trying to find out which of the cards in the original core set are still legal. Searching for "e:core z:current b:active" turns up nothing, though, presumably because core is rotated. Is there a way to find cards out of rotated sets, that are also in newer sets?

There isn't really a nice way to do that with the current NRDB or v2 API. The new API (v3) probably exposes enough data for this, but there isn't a specific operator for that exact question.
