OpenCHAMI exists in an ecosystem of other HPC system managers like BCM, CSM, Warewulf and others. Each project has strengths and focus areas that allow users to solve problems. If we approach the other projects in a spirit of zero-sum competition, the ecosystem doesn’t get more effective for delivering HPC capacity. If we embrace alternatives and aim for interoperability, OpenCHAMI components that are independently valuable will see usage beyond our partnership and benefit from the improvements of other community members.
In particular, there are several areas of ecosystem collaboration that LANL wishes to focus on in the coming months.
Using standalone discovery services to find available BMCs within a network boundary, allowing other tools to benefit from automated discovery.
Supporting inventory export modules to generate node lists for other tools like Warewulf and as Ansible inventories for automation.
Establishing a standard for federation of multiple clusters/failure domains.
