Compilation with recent GNU compilers requires --std=gnu++03 #2

The source code contains a number of constructs which are not permitted under the 2011 ISO C++ standard. The work-around is to compile with --std=gnu++03

Partially fixed: GNU compilers now accept the code with warnings.
More work is needed before the code is fully standard-compiant.
