Long story short, here is what I have observed:

This does not happen if I open the link in a new tab.

I have the same experience, either on using a new tab or not (back to this page https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page, btw?). Same in Chrome. Here's the relevant piece of code.

Probably best to use either cookies or query strings to do this, I suppose.
