I like what they've done with the Winchester high street which has partially gone down this route. Getting the buses out of the high street was a genius move. Three issues I see with the kinds of designs in those tweets. 1. cleanliness. I see in some of the pictures people sitting with their feet on some of the other seating area - apparently it is designed with that use case specifically in mind. it'd just get too dirty to sit on. 2. maintenance, especially in winter. 3. finding practical space to build those kinds of structures without consuming walking or cycling space. It'd be interesting to see if you could come up with a pedestrianised area, but with the Swan Centre being the dominant retail, I can't see any street that makes sense apart from as a gesture.
