Kevin mentioned a resource directory written in PHP and MySQL that he helped create at a hackathon (I think he said this was 2018) for Lane County Department of Human Services, here it is hosted on his site: https://galaxyinternet.us/lanecounty2/ Here's another version of a resource directory for White Bird, this is the one that I thought Kevin was referring to when he mentioned a 2018 hackathon, but it appears to be a different site: repo https://github.com/Hack4Eugene/white-bird-clinic-by-h4ckb4b3s article about the project: https://whitebirdclinic.org/help-book-hack |

A resource directory from Food for Lane County: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1QROwnSWv6v3EMIMxZ_LTUWdDq8k&ll=43.986271934319134%2C-123.23032350000001&z=9 Lane County's official resource directory: https://thelane.myresourcedirectory.com/ They maintain a great database too. By using the Open Referral protocol, it's possible for organizations that maintain databases to share their information, an ecosystem of databases, that each could help maintain and use to populate their online and print resource directories. Lane has live inventory data about available beds in shelters, and the data coordinator for the county noted that this information is especially valuable to people in need. They want to know what's available right at the moment they're looking at the site. For example, here's the page for the Eugene Mission with number of beds: https://thelane.net/index.php?option=com_cpx&task=resource.view&id=3420069&search_history_id=168403557&name=Emergency-Shelter-icon-location&code=BH-1800.8500-150%2C+BH-1800.8500-300%2C+BH-1800.9000 In talking about her work with the county, Lise Stuart mentioned software the county uses, WellSky: https://www.lanecounty.org/government/county_departments/health_and_human_services/human_services_division/hmis_cmis_servicepoint And Greg Bloom said that WellSky has adopted the Human Services Data Specification (that's the Open Referral protocol), but has yet to implement it. He expressed some surprise at how good the data Lane County has is, and offered to help all these organizations to collaborate and to create a sustainable ecosystem of public information about available services. https://wellsky.com/blog/2019/05/09/wellsky-strengthens-interoperability-by-supporting-the-human-service-data-specification/ |

Greg Bloom mentioned Benetech's open source pilot project as an example of a data collaborative and looking over this video and introduction, it's an example of what we're creating for Lane County:
https://benetech.org/about/resources/benetech-service-net/ Here's the Service Net site from Benetech: https://servicenet.benetech.org/#/public/BayArea Researching Benetech and spotted this one, a job opening with a Benetech subsidiary, "We are fiscally sponsored by Benetech, Silicon Valley’s leading tech-for-good nonprofit." A bit of background on the company: https://techcrunch.com/2020/04/02/jim-fruchterman-raises-1-7m-for-tech-matters-a-new-effort-to-help-nonprofits-do-tech-better/ |

Greg emphasized that there aren't many partnerships of social service organizations working together to maintain a data collaborative, and he noted one other example, in Ontario.
I've been reviewing a site created with CIOC, comparing how the various provider information is listed: https://kelowna.cioc.ca/bresults.asp?UseCICVw=1&STerms=food&SType=AIt seems like the way people would find that resource directory is on the homepage of the social service provider:
The lower-right of the site (https://kelowna.cioc.ca/) includes a note: This database runs on the OpenCIOC Platform (http://www.opencioc.org/) |

Code for America has a resource directory project, this one is still active and been going since around 2013:
Ohana is a project that Greg Bloom worked on and it has a direct lineage to the Human Services Data Specification: https://openreferral.org/about/history/ Here's their site implemented in Miami, it foregrounds the search box (but typing plausible searches in there produces a number of "no results"): http://miami-ohana-web-search.herokuapp.com/ For some context in designing an easy to navigate site, here's a few of the first thoughts that went into the UX, this rolls back to May 2020, around when I started thinking about the Little Help Book: https://www.loomio.org/d/FcshW0rw/little-help-book-prototype-of-the-ux-ui-for-a-website-and-app The Human Services Data Specification is a data format that allows multiple organizations that maintain resources directories to write and publish their data to a common network. And this is a piece of the puzzle that emerged through the Code for America network (via cfa.slack.com), it's awesome to connect with people working on a similar challenge and for so long, with so much thought put in, the openreferral.org site is a great resource. |
