As you know, GPAC 0.7.0 has recently announced support for "SHM6+ bitstreams" (final spec). It would be really welcome if OpenHEVC could be upgraded from the current SHM4.1to SHM6.0 to avoid deprecation.

It does support it. However not on the hevc_rext branch. You should try on HEVC_extensions or ffmpeg_update branch which will soon be used as a master branch. The support is still limited but it should be able to handle at least two layers and almost every scalability configuration outside of non 420 chromat formats.
Please tell us if you experience some issues with it.
