Background
Outreach efforts at journals are ongoing. Our experience at eLife strongly suggests that we can engage authors by sending a text blurb about Biofactoid to them at several points in the publication workflow: 1. Generic proofing query for all research content, 2. Email to authors upon acceptance, 3. Information for authors on website.
eLife (1) requires submitting authors to post their manuscript to a preprint server and (2) package each submission as a "Reviewed Preprint", which may or may not be forwarded to a Version of Record. In both cases, there is metadata submitted to either CrossRef and/or PubMed. Given an author's title for their paper, this allows our system to retrieve rich metadata including:
This information uniquely identifies an article and provides attribution. Importantly, we can display this information alongside the author's curated items (i.e. Explorer) and include it in structured data (i.e. BioPAX). From a user's standpoint, when the paper information is linked to the curated pathway knowledge, it gives the sense that their research is connected, well-attributed and well, more official.
Issue
In general, at acceptance time - the time we propose to have Biofactoid recommended - journals won't have deposited any information a manuscript. Therefore, Biofactoid won't be able to draw in any article metadata, and it will appear rather 'bare'.
Our CRON system will in fact attempt to identify the article by the provided information (i.e. title) on a weekly basis. However, this begs the question: How long before that accepted articles are indexed by PubMed?
