Lerna, a very popular infrastructure package for node js / npm package release management, has been unmaintained because their main developer suffered from burnout (lerna/lerna#2703).
However, it was recently transitioned to a company (i.e. a team) to take over maintenance for a while (lerna/lerna#3121).
This represents an interesting shift and model for sustainability -- can we encourage transition projects maintained by individual volunteers to be maintained by companies instead? As the post above says,
"One of the biggest arguments in favor of Nrwl stewarding future Lerna development, in my mind, is that they represent corporate sponsorship from a company well-aligned with the goals of Lerna itself and the community of multi-package monorepo enthusiasts. Because so much of Lerna 3 was effectively subsidized by my former employer, I believe this bodes well for the health of the project."
Can we encourage more companies to go this route -- can they "adopt" OSS projects that they are well-aligned with and which need more help?
