Make viewing the default
Make it toggle the view in place: in the current tab make it it can easily be toggled between the different views (currently edit and preview but perhaps a rich edit view as well - and an inspector/history - or customizable ones)
Replace the eye in the right with an icon for opening a split view, and show whatever the secondary view is for the selected tab

For toggling the view in place, and other stuff, have an icon for showing a dropdown menu/area for a split - also use that for renaming and customizing the view, opening pages related to the appearance of it and reloading after changes and showing history and stuff
