Launch editor in a split screen mode rather than fill window

How might I be able to launch an editor input in a split-screen mode?

What do you mean by "split screen" mode? You mean the editor should display 2 input screens?

I'm not sure this would be possible, it likely depends a lot of what your default editor and what options this editor exposes (which aren't likely to be standardized.)
