I use stellarium to star-hop my way around the night sky with a telescope and as such rely on its star maps being accurate. Yesterday I discovered that a star close to 24 Canum Venaticorum, which can be seen in stellarium, does not in fact exist! This is especially egregious since the supposed star in question is a relatively bright magnitude 10 star.

I am attaching to figures with the issue:

  • stellarium_error_observation: A processed camera picture showing the star field around 24CNv as captured by me yesterday night
  • stellarium_error_app_screenshot: A screenshot from the application. Notice how the star which is selected is nowhere to be found in the actual night sky. Also, note that other stars do match up closely between the application and observation so I definitely looking at the right place in the sky!

I guess this might be an error in the star catalog rather than the application proper, but I did not know where else to report this bug.
