Need of Streaming layer

You have used a self-contained data source which can be used without the need to have a Kafka layer in between. Supposedly,if I want to implement your use case & I want to use Kafka as layer in between,then what advantage/disadvantage will I have ?? When the need will arise for me to use Kafka ?? What was the need that you didn't use Kafka in your application ??
