I'd really love to hear from the members of our organization who currently are employed outside of the typical institutions that are focused on research primarily (i.e. academic institutions, national labs, etc). From my own, albeit very limited, experience working in a research-focused department within a private, commercial corporation, the challenges in obtaining support and resources for the department's mission was extremely fraught (including validating its existence), let alone getting resources for developing software in support of that mission. I suspect that there is a decent amount of broad overlap when it comes to funding and organization, but it would interesting to identify the differences as they exist to better understand how US-RSE can organize to support those individuals and groups.
