now that the trap is finally working for me, I thought I suggest some more bait options, maybe for future updates and even suggestions for craftable bait if that sounds more suitable. Even though I'm not very good with Pixel Art I could try and create item textures for them.
More bait Options
Cod:Beetroot Seeds, Brown Mushrooms Salmon:Wheat Seeds, Red Mushrooms Tropical Fish:Melon Seeds, Dried Kelp
I didn't suggest more bait for Pufferfish as it's not really useful as Food unless a Mod is used that makes good use for it as food.
Treasure:Gold Nugget, Redstone Dust
This bait would also require a new loot table that only contains valuable random loot and no junk.
To increase the chance for more valuable loot items within the current loot table (which also includes junk) players could place the following bait: Copper Ingot, Iron Nugget (If a treasure bait with a new loot table was implemented the valuable item could also be picked from that table instead of the random one, but only if the player happens to be lucky. The nuggets or ingots but into the bait slot would only decrease if the trap generates valuable loot from the other loot table.)
Craftable bait options (shapeless crafting)
The crafted bait could speed up the fishing by having a chance to catch 2 fish in one try (given that the default speed is used to make it somewhat balanced)
Crafted bait items is something I've definitely wanted to check out! I'm a bit busy atm but in the future (next month) I want to visit it as well as some other ideas I have in store. I like the bait options atm as I feel it gives some life to unused foods in vanilla, however I also want to introduce some compat with Farmers delight so I could see some more ingredients being involved.
Hey there, sorry for being absent, I was caught up with something else lately. I didn't use any items from mods for the bait recipes so the mod could be used by vanilla+ players. But if compat with FD was implemented I could surely come up with other recipe mixes or rather, additional ones ^^

Salmon Bait: 1 Bread + 1 Mushroom Stew + 1 Egg + 1 Bonemeal (will craft 4x Salmon Bait)
Tropical Bait: 1 Bread + 1 Pumpkin Pie + 1 Dried Kelp + 1 Bonemeal (will craft 4x Tropical Bait)
Pufferfish Bait: 1 Carrot + 1 Gold Nugget + 1 Cookie + 1 Bonemeal (will craft 2x Pufferfish Bait)
As mentioned I'd try to help with textures for the crafted bait items or even write a list of possible valuable loot for a new loot table :)
