This is an example page. It's different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

- - - - - -
-

Hi there! I'm a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin' caught in the rain.)

-
- - - -

...or something like this:

- - - -
-

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.

I like this idea shared by Matias Ventura, centered on making it easier to introduce standalone blocks to WordPress via the Block Directory. Leveraging the existing Gutenberg infrastructure and contributor base, allows for significantly more collaboration and awareness, which would lead to a more diverse collection of high-quality, endorsed blocks for everyone.

Scrolling text, link cards, icons, dark mode toggles—the list goes on of interesting blocks that would be great if served at the quality threshold of core blocks.

- - - -

The blocks in WordPress core are best-in-class. I’m looking forward to discovering others in the Block Directory that share the same DNA as these.

I am sitting here writing this post, looking across Trillium Lake at the majestic Mount Hood off in the distance. But I’m not. Instead, I feel the soft arms of my office chair at my sides, a far cry from the rustic charm of a folding camping chair.

- - - -

I’m immersed in one of the new VisionOS environments, an illusion replacing the world around me with digital renditions of iconic landscapes, the moon included. The realism is uncanny, particularly under the cool glow of the night sky, dotted with uncountable stars—but yet I can't decide if I'm underwhelmed.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
A man (Rich Tabor) wearing a virtual reality Vision Pro headset sits in a dark room with a subtle light source in the background.
- - - -

This duality, a blend of augmented reality and tangible existence, creates a sense of feeling “half-in” and “half-out”—a recurring theme throughout my first impressions of the Vision Pro. Now don't get me wrong; this medium provides what I do think is a look (albeit a hazy one) into the future.

- - - -

Taking off the Vision Pro for the first time made me immediately notice just how static my TV felt. It’s machined into a state that cannot be manipulated. Contrast that with the seemingly endless scalability and portability of videos within the Vision Pro.

- - - -

Last night, I watched an episode of "Masters of the Air" while lying down in the shadow of Mount Hood, gazing up at a massive screen. It‘s an unparalleled experience—but one that, unfortunately, feels much too solitary. I do expect that one day we'll be able to share windows with each other, but until then, the individualistic nature is not particularly enjoyable for myself.

- - - -

Another interesting bit I've found intriguing is using the Vision Pro as an external monitor for MacOS. It's nice to glance at a 13” MacBook, press a (virtual) button above it, and see its display cast into VisionOS, complete with all the scale and maneuverability of any other native window.

- - - -

However, there's a catch.

- - - -

Instinctively, the first thing I did was look at something and tap my fingers together, expecting an interaction. No dice. I awkwardly reached for my nearby trackpad, and a cursor—reminiscent of iPadOS—happily bounced through the interface elements.

- - - -

That’s fine, but I expected to be able to look, and tap, my way around—as I learned throughout the rest of VisionOS. Perhaps MacOS will properly support this feature soon, but for now, it feels somewhat lackluster in the interim.

- - - -

And finally, as far as first impressions go, I’d expect every person to note the elephant in the room: this thing is heavy; there’s no getting around it. I find it uncomfortable to wear for more than thirty minutes or so. It's taxing on my neck, a bit on my shoulders, and, of course, on my eyes.

- - - -

In one sense, wearing a Vision Pro is like catching a glimpse of  the future—one where apps are integrated within our environments, or rather any environment. But for now, I'm left with a slight headache and dry eyes.

Well, we made it. Welcome to 2024.

- - - -

Last year was one of those years that will hold an impact far beyond from what I realize today. 2023 was a year of change, connection, exploration, and meaningfulness.

Working

- - - -

I kicked off the year joining Automattic

- - - -

Automattic fosters an environment where everyone is encouraged to share ideas, work across teams, and consistently challenge the status quo. It's right up my ally and I feel like I'm contributing in a meaningful way, producing meaningful output.

- - - -

I've contributed to WordPress in some fashion for over a decade now, but 2023 was different. Focusing on the project nearly exclusively, and with more collaborators than ever, I've hit a stride that is equal parts challenging and rewarding.

- - - -

Notably, I was the Design Lead for WordPress 6.2 and 6.3, and a major contributor to the widely acclaimed default WordPress theme, Twenty Twenty-Four

- - - -

Traveling (73,770 miles)

- - - -

I've had the opportunity to travel all over the world for team meetups (and WordCamps), broadening my horizon quite a bit.

- - - -

I covered just about 74k miles and having visited 6 countries:

- - - -
A stylized infographic from the Flighty app, which tracks flights. It resembles a passport and provides a summary of Rich Tabor's flight activity, including the number of flights taken, total distance flown, flight time, number of airports visited, and the airlines flown with.

  • Malaysia 🇲🇾
  • - - - -
  • Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹

- - - -

I enjoyed every trip, meeting hundreds of passionate WordPress contributors from all over the world.

- - - -

Contributing is about connecting; meeting the people behind the ideas and pull requests. These meetups help to build relationships, encourage collaboration, and provide space to review and plan.

- - - -

A few of my favorite photos from all over:

- - - -
Interior view of a modern building featuring a large window with a patterned glass design, casting shadows on an orange carpeted floor. The sunlight filters through, creating a warm, bright atmosphere with a view of trees and a blue sky outside.
- - - -

Blogging

- - - -

I moved my blog to WordPress.com and re-designed it, twice. Design is iterative, I suppose.

- - - -

My blog is much simpler, and more feed-like, with nice filters by topic at the top. I wrote a few custom blocks—like the comment count avatars and a better "read more" block that looks more like the link cards we all know from social.

- - - -

And I tossed aside the more "heavy-handed" SEO plugins for a simple function that covers the bases. And another function to supply a fallback social featured image, so I don't have worry about creating those for most posts anymore.

- - - -

My goal with these changes was to reduce the barriers to publishing and create a space more conducive to writing.

- - - -

These small iterations allow for a quicker, more effortless publishing flow, where posting is less of a "list of things to do" and more about writing.

- - - -

I really like it now. It's precise, yet welcoming.

- - - -

Writing

- - - -

Speaking of writing, I published 12 posts this year and had just over 65k views. And since re-designing my blog late last year, I've published seven of those posts—those efforts on reducing publish workload seem to be working.

- - - -

My most popular posts of 2023 were:

- - - - - - - -

I like this spread. I’ve been intentional about sharing product and leadership commentary. My personal favorites are “Tiny details” and “Fail fast” — perspectives you may have come across if you follow me on Github or X/Twitter

- - - -

Posting on X (formally Twitter)

- - - -

I published much more on X throughout 2023, and it shows.

- - - -

I’ve had the biggest year yet, nearly doubling followers (+8k), and increasing impressions by 1600% to 1.8 million.

- - - -

The release threads I publish were by far the most popular:

- - - - - - - -

If you're not following me, I'm @richard_tabor on X. I share all about WordPress, blocks, design, and product.

- - - -

Follow me if you're into those kind of things.

- - - -

Reading

- - - -

My top reads of 2023 are:

- - - - - - - -

I'm kicking off 2024 with "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" by Gabrielle Zevin and a couple biographies: "Michael Jordan: The Life" by Roman Lazenby and "Elon Musk" by Walter Isaacson.

- - - -

Life

- - - -

We've had a great year in the Tabor household. I've particularly enjoyed playing Lego with the girls, pretending to be the Tooth Fairy a couple times, traveling to Athens, Greece and Yurimagaus, Peru with my wife, Jesse.

- - - -
A brown, curly-haired small dog (Cavapoo) resting on a textured pink cushion with a soft-focus background.
- - - -

To top off the year, here's me playing guitar in my city's Christmas concert:

- - - -

2023 sure was one for the books.

- - - -

How was your year? Comment with your own year in reviews; I enjoy reading those.

A multidisciplinary maker specializing in the intersection of product, design and engineering. Making WordPress.

- - - -

I had my start designing websites and running a WordPress theme shop. When the WordPress block editor was coming to fruition, I began leaning into React and building CoBlocks.

- - - -

In 2019, GoDaddy acquired CoBlocks, Block Gallery, and my theme shop ThemeBeans. I joined as the Senior Product Manager of WordPress Experience, relaunching the GoDaddy WordPress Themes directory, building the Go theme, and growing CoBlocks from 5k to 500k active installs.

- - - -

In 2021, I joined Extendify as Head of Product, where I focused on building a platform of site design and WordPress host tools. By 2022, our plugin had become one of the fastest-growing, boasting over 70k users within its first year.

- - - -

In 2023, I joined Automattic, working on WordPress directly, focusing on making publishing more intuitive and human-centric all around.

- - - -

Designing and building experiences is what I do. I think big. I obsess over tiny details. I breathe curiosity.

- - - -

That’s me. Now what about you?

I received so much good feedback about the first issue of Shaping WordPress, thank you for the kind words.

- - - -

If you're new here, welcome to Shaping WordPress, where I share every couple weeks what’s top of my mind and what's shaping up for WordPress. Subscribe if you haven't already.

AI website builder I'm in on

- - - -

Automattic, my employer and the the parent company of WordPress.com, is experimenting with an AI website builder for WordPress called Big Sky. I'd say it's pretty neat. Each of these screenshots below were generated from prompts:

- - - -
- - - -

The interplay of AI and WordPress has been gaining more traction recently, with the likes of CodeWPKadence AIZipWPJetpack, and many more jumping into the mix—each with their own spin on how AI integrates with WordPress.

- - - -

I've had the opportunity to work with the Big Sky team, helping to unlock how AI can become an invaluable tool for launching, designing, and managing WordPress websites.

- - - -

It's very much in active development, but if you're curious, sign up for the Big Sky beta

- - - -

One big thing I'm working on

- - - -

Now that the technical implementation is in place, I’ve been leaning in on improving the experience around color and typography variations, to prep for WordPress 6.6

- - - -

So why does this matter?

- - - -

When I think of building a website, I think of the combination of content and style, assembled together to create an intentional message. We have themes, and we have variations of themes; why not abstract further to boost creative expression without introducing technical burdens?

- - - -

Out-of-the-box, themes will have a broader range of color palettes and typography options, allowing for many creative permutations, without additional effort from theme designers. Plus, changing colors or typography across an existing website is much less concerning than changing a theme entirely.

- - - -

WordPress is becoming more composable than ever, especially now that blockspatterns, and styles can be assembled independently.

- - - -

Three other ideas I'm pushing forward

- - - -
    -
  1. Should the Block Inserter remain open, until you close it? Potentially so, although we'd likely loose the current UX of focusing immediately on the Inserter search field. What do you think? Is it worth the cost? - - - - -

  2. - - - -
  3. Not small by any means, but I've been working alongside contributors on explorations for a zoomed-out page composition view. It reduces the granularity of editing, simplifies selection, rearranging, removing, and styling of entire sections of a page at a time. You should expect to read more about this in my next issue.

  5. It's still confusing when global padding is applied throughout pages, patterns, and templates. I'd like it to be much more predictable, also allowing for better interoperability for patterns—as designers wouldn't need to apply fixed left and right padding values to them. Here's the pull request if you'd like to test it out so far.

This is an example page. It's different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I'm a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin' caught in the rain.)

I had my start designing websites and running a WordPress theme shop. When the WordPress block editor was coming to fruition, I began leaning into React and building CoBlocks.

In 2019, GoDaddy acquired  + CoBlocks, Block Gallery, and my theme shop ThemeBeans. I joined as the Senior Product Manager of WordPress Experience, relaunching the GoDaddy WordPress Themes directory, building the Go theme, and growing CoBlocks from 5k to 500k active installs. +

In 2021, I joined  + Extendify as Head of Product, where I focused on building a platform of site design and WordPress host tools. By 2022, our plugin had become one of the fastest-growing, boasting over 70k users within its first year. +

In 2023, I joined  + Automattic, working on  + WordPress directly, focusing on making publishing more intuitive and human-centric all around. +

Designing and building experiences is what I do. I think big. I obsess over  + tiny details. I breathe curiosity. +

Welcome to Shaping WordPress, where I share every couple weeks what’s top of my mind and what’s shaping up for WordPress. If you haven't already, subscribe.

- - - -

One big thing I'm wrapping up

- - - -

I merged this lift supporting section styles into the Assembler theme I’ve been experimenting with, and have this follow-up ready to go.

- - - -

I have a full post incoming, but here’s the gist:

- - - -
    -
  1. Assembler now offers alternate color palettes and font sets for mixing and matching.
  2. - - - -
  3. Assembler uses JSON partials for block style variations, letting you style entire groups of blocks at a time while also maintaining those styles independently of content.
  4. -
- - - -

This results in 720 styles in one theme, with an interface that is no more complex. You choose a color palette and a font set that bot fit closest to your vibe, then personalize them further in the Site Editor. Too easy.

- - - -

Theme designers have been creating style variations for alternate color palettes for as long as theme style variations have been introduced. WordPress 6.6 will offer native support for modifying colors and typography independently, without affecting other styles and settings.

- - - -

This is a clear evolution of theme style variations, enabling individuals, freelancers, and agencies to rapidly develop WordPress sites by using a library of customizable style configurations—whether provided by a theme or curated otherwise. And if you don’t want style variations, don’t add them to a theme—like I said, the interface is no more complex with style variations.

- - - -

WordCamp I recently attended

- - - -

WordCamp Europe 2024 in Turin, Italy, heavily emphasized topics centered on the WordPress editor, block building, and block theme creation with an unprecedented 16 sessions dedicated to these topics—a new record for any flagship WordCamp. It was a great event in a great city. 10/10.

- - - -

My main takeaway from Turin is the noticeable shift within the WordPress community, as more people are experiencing firsthand how capable the out-of-the-box WordPress editor is. Although I strive to be a positive voice in the community, those who work with me know I am one of WordPress’s biggest critics, always pushing to meet end-users’ expectations. There is much to be done to make the simple things intuitive, and complex things possible, but I am proud of the work happening daily to push WordPress in that direction—and it’s nice to see the results of that work in people’s faces.

- - - -

We’re no longer just talking about the future of WordPress; the future of WordPress is here.

- - - -

WordPress Speed Build Challenges I competed in

- - - -

Jessica Lyschik and I rebuilt the Isamu Noguchi Foundation homepage in a 30-minute live WordPress Speed Build Challenge at WordCamp Europe. The popular session had attendees both sitting on the floor and spilling out the back doors. It ended up being a unique, low-key, casual, and engaging WordCamp session where folks could watch us build live, asking us questions along the way.

- - - -

Despite using different WordPress themes, Jessica and I quickly created a high-fidelity representation of the original homepage. It's remarkable how WordPress's built-in editing tools allow you to create virtually any design.

- - - -

I also participated in another one of these, hosted on Jamie's YouTube channel the week before. Are you up for a challenge?

- - - -

WordPress 6.6, landing next month

- - - -

Apart from my intentional explorations that leverage the upcoming features, as the Design Lead for WordPress 6.6 I've been helping to design the release assets. This includes the feature grid, about page and microsite. Assembling these assets is a good way to review the state of WordPress.
