The thumbnails being used on pages such as: https://wordpress.org/showcase-v2/archives/page/4/ are full-size, or at least from bigger than the rendered size.

We probably can devise a more rigorous srcset and sizes to ensure there isn’t a significant discrepancy between the render size and the intrinsic size.
