Add a Remote Control?

I was hoping to add all the hardware customization to a remote control but I'm not familiar enough with Python to bypass all the ADC and add in a serial input.

My goal is to hook the remote up to an Arduino that can talk directly to the Pi either through serial or i2c. I'm more on the "arduino" side of things and don't know how to implement this on the Pi.
