At the time of writing, decentralized games isn't as well-defined as other game categories, such as web, mobile, or social. My starting definition for Decentralized Games is games that have decentralized the following features:
Player Identity
Asset Ownership
Data Storage
We can achieve the first two points by building our player's identities and storing their virtual assets on public permissionless blockchains, such as Near and Ethereum. For the 3rd point, we can use decentralized storage networks such as IPFS.
There is still a ton of experimentation happening in Decentralized Games though, and there are other definitions we can take inspiration from such as Decentralized Apps (dApps) and Web 3.
Some ideas that I think should be further explored and added into decentralized games are:
Fully Open-Source - What if anyone can just fork the game source code, and is there a way to create a sustainable economy in the game using tokens?
Community Governance - What if the direction of the game isn't defined by the game developers, but is directly community-driven?
A few more hopefully from these discussions!
I hope this template helps us make innovative games using these new decentralized technologies, please do discuss, do pull-requests to improve the code, and share the games that you create!
