e2e test fails waiting for a string that's present

Sometimes an e2e test fails on exp_string timeout even though the string is present in the command's log! 😕 This may be an underlying issue in e.g. expectrl.

a lot of e2e tests have been moved to integration tests so this may no longer be relevant
