Quickly follow groups of accounts, chosen by fellow Mastodon users, reflecting topics and communities of interest to you. Browse Starter Packs [link Community] What's a Starter Pack? A starter pack is a packaged topical list of accounts you can follow all at once. The entire pack loads into a list, so packs are also create subject specific feeds. How do Starter Packs work? Simple. Just browse the Starter Pack Directory [link Community] for a pack you want to load. If this is your first time using Mastodon Starter Packs you will be asked to log-in with your instance server address. Be assured that Mastodon Starter Packs will only use the permissions granted for starter packs. We will never access your account for any other purpose, and no account data will be retained. Then just select any pack from the directory and either follow the entire pack or browse the list to select accounts to follow individually. You can also create your own packs and share them with the community. For more Mastodon Starter Pack FAQ [link FAQ]. Let's get started! It's easy. Click Load Quick Start Pack [link LetsGetStarted] to log-in and load five sample accounts into a list titled "MSPQuickStart". Don't worry, you can always un-follow these later. |
FAQ Page Text (early draft): Tell me about Mastodon Starter Packs? Mastodon Starter Packs is a website application that connects to your Mastodon account to follow curated lists of accounts. Starter packs load into Mastodon lists, thereby becoming subject feeds. You can also create new starter packs to share with the community. So, they’re like Bluesky Starter Packs? Yes, but better because Mastodon Starter Packs automatically organizes your user experience into feeds by adding new followers to lists. What starter packs are there? New starter packs are being created by the Mastodon community all the time. Check out the current Starter Pack Directory [link Community] for a searchable listing of available starter packs. You can also use this site to Create a Starter Pack [link Your] and share it with the community. What are lists and why is loading starter packs to lists a good thing? Once you start adding groups of followers to your Mastodon account things get pretty overwhelming if you are just looking at your home feed. The solution is lists. You can add accounts you follow to lists, thereby grouping accounts by topic. Lists are great. You should definitely organize your Mastodon experience using lists. If it helps to think of them as feeds, do that. Basically you click on a list and you get a stream of posts on that subject. For more check out FediTips: How to use the Lists feature on Mastodon. What makes Mastodon Starter Packs really useful is that you load packs directly into a list. The starter pack creator designates a default list name, but users can change it to whatever name they want. When you load a pack you follow all the accounts in the pack. If the designated list does not already exist, Mastodon Starter Packs creates it, and then adds all the accounts to the list. Once you have loaded a few starter packs you will see the beauty of using lists. All of your packs will be organized by list name and deliver topical feeds based on the accounts contained in the pack. Can I then add more accounts to the list? Sure! That’s the idea. Many of these accounts will boost other great accounts in their topic area. You will quickly find additional accounts you will want to follow. When you do follow a new account add it immediately to the list by clicking the “…” button at the top of the profile and selecting “Add or Remove from lists”. You might even message the starter pack creator suggesting they add a great account to their pack. The pack creator updated pack with added accounts, what should I do? You can just load it again. Mastodon Starter Packs will follow any additional accounts and add them to the list, and your list feed will now include all accounts from the revised starter pack. What if I don’t like the pack list title? Simply change it. The pack creator suggests a default list name, but you can change it before you load the pack. How do I know if my account is in a starter pack? When your account is added to pack and anytime the pack is updated you will receive a notification telling you the name of the pack and the account name of the pack creator. You can reply to this notification to be removed from the pack. Also, you can check Find Packs Containing You [link Containing] at any time for all the packs that currently contain your account. I don't want to be in any starter packs. How can I opt-out? [answer text include #NoPacks, not discoverable] What if I don’t want to follow accounts from Threads or Bluesky? Any pack that contains Threads or Bluesky bridged accounts will have a special notice. Just don’t load one of them. |
