Short description of the idea (140 character tweet):

John Oliver proposed Feb. 2nd - after the inauguration - to push for reforms to our elections. Let's build the infrastructure to organize a movement around it.

What is your project concept or idea? What challenge or opportunity will it solve?

No Groundhog Day would be an information clearinghouse for:

  • Why our election processes need to be reformed.
  • Proposed solution(s) for solving our election problems

And a toolkit for political activists who want to organize around this issue.

Who will benefit from your project? Describe the humans at the center of the problem - who are they?

The American Voters.

How would they benefit? Can you tell their story?

In the U.S., in every federal election, over 50% of votes are "statistically wasted." Counted, but have no possible impact on the election. Most of America has no representation in government. For the primary process (run by private clubs, the political parties), the crucial primary process is subject to arcane rules. Sometime primary results are discarded (legally). Other times, they are changed ex post facto. And still other times, how people vote simply doesn't matter after the process is obscured.

We need actual democracy, where the rules are clear, the voters have a voice and a real choice, and where everyone is represented.

Do you have photos of them? Or quotes?

Literally every citizen in the United States.

Issue area(s) relevant to your project idea:

None of the below issues can be solved until we address systemic problems caused by our lack of representation in government:

  • Arts & Culture
  • Children & Youth
  • Economic Opportunity & Development
  • Education
  • Environment & Sustainability
  • Food/Hunger
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Mobility/Transportation
  • Neighborhoods
  • Open Government/Transparency
  • Public Safety
  • Other

What is the current state of your project idea?

  • I have an idea or concept of a solution, but have not yet prototyped or tested it

Tell us more about the current state of your project idea.

Do you have any links to news articles, text, mockups, code, or data?

Tell us about yourself.

What is your background? Why is this challenge important to you?

I am the co-creator and former technical lead of Mayday PAC, which raised $11m to fight corruption in the largest non-profit crowdfunding project of all time.

Are you representing a group in submitting this project idea?

No.

I've also created a Slack channel called #no-groundhog-day.

You should get an email soon with more details about the pitching and a seperate email with the Slack invite if you haven't received that already.
