Use npm install --save @types/kendo-ui instead (where the --save flag is optional (function of the npm version).

There are several other errors (typos) in this document:

Step 3, Step 4, step 5: bad use of "```" sequence
Step 7 and Step 8 should refer to .ts files - not .js files
