I'm concerned anout this, because it seems the code hasn't been worked on in the last 2 years. Is NixNote still active or are we expecting for one day for it to just stop working?

This repository is currently not maintained (as the maintainer is not reachable).
For version 2.1+ see https://github.com/robert7/nixnote2 . Most of Linux distributions have already switched upstream.

See changelog: https://github.com/robert7/nixnote2/blob/master/debian/changelog
The 2.1.5 version uses Evernote API 1.29 by using newest https://github.com/d1vanov/QEverCloud
(1.29 is newest version or at least quite up to date)
