Improving error message clarity

In general, it would be useful to have a code block that searches for common errors and returns useful error messages. This will make it easier for new users to (safely) run the code. I'm opening an issue here to keep track of these types of checks.

• Fails in fitting.lnprobfn when a spectroscopic noise model is passed & there are no spectroscopic observations.
